What makes a smart home ad actually work?

Smart home products ask buyers to let a device into the most private place they have, and to trust that it will be easy to set up. So the ads that scale on Meta rarely lead with technology. They lead with a moment at home the buyer already lives (a 3am baby check, guests at the door, a sunrise wake-up), a worry the product removes (drilling, contracts, “am I safe?”), or a trusted third party that says it works (U.S. News, Wirecutter, 13,000 reviews). Across these 25 ads, the word “smart” does very little of the selling.

01

Remove the install worry first

Wyze (“Stick it to your window. Plug it in. Done.”), Schlage (“Smart doesn't have to mean complicated”), Cove (30-minute DIY install) and Skylight (“even non tech-savvy people”) all answer “will I be able to set this up?” before they sell a single feature.

02

Sell a moment in the home, not a device

Lutron sells a sunrise wake-up, Vivint the feeling of a new house and Nanit the baby registry. The product shows up as the thing that makes that moment easier.

03

Borrow trust from someone else

SimpliSafe leans on 7 years of U.S. News awards, Aura on Wirecutter's #1 pick and 13,000+ reviews, ecobee and ADT on real customers. Security and family products are trust purchases, and third-party proof does the heavy lifting.

04

Make the price feel small or free

SimpliSafe reframes monitoring as ~$1/day, Cove offers a $0 system, Philips Hue gives 3 free bulbs and Dreame stacks a record discount with free accessories. Hardware plus subscription is a big number, so the best ads shrink it.

None of this is unique to any one brand — it's a pattern across every ad below. Use the "why it works" note under each example to spot which lever a given brand is pulling, and borrow the tactic rather than the execution.

Smart Home ad do's and don'ts

Do

  • Answer “can I install this myself?” in the first line
  • Show the product inside a real moment at home
  • Lead with third-party awards and review counts for trust purchases
  • Break subscription pricing into a daily or monthly figure
  • Name compatibility (Matter, phone, watch) up front

Don't

  • Don't lead with “smart” — every product in the category is
  • Don't use fear-heavy crime imagery as your only angle
  • Don't hide monitoring fees or contract terms
  • Don't show an empty, staged room with no people in it
  • Don't assume buyers know what a hub, bridge or protocol is
📖 Most smart home brands sell hardware plus a monitoring or membership plan, so retention matters as much as the first sale. Check yours with our free Churn Rate Calculator. This page is the live swipe file; that one's the math.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a smart home ad convert?

Trust and ease. The strongest smart home ads in this file either remove the install or complexity worry (Wyze, Schlage, Cove, Skylight), show the product inside a real moment at home (Lutron, Vivint, Nanit), or lean on third-party proof like awards and review counts (SimpliSafe, Aura) — rather than listing smart features.

Should home security ads use fear?

Sparingly. Most of the security brands here (SimpliSafe, ADT, Vivint, ecobee) sell peace of mind — “rest easy”, “never have to worry” — rather than showing break-ins. Reassurance tends to age better in the feed than fear, and is less likely to run into ad-review issues.

How should smart home brands advertise a subscription?

Make the number feel small and the commitment feel safe. SimpliSafe uses ~$1/day with no long-term contract, Owlet spells out $99 then $19/month including a 6-month minimum, and Cove makes the hardware free when you switch. Being upfront about terms builds the trust these purchases depend on.

Do creator ads work for smart home products?

Yes — especially move-in and family moments. Vivint's creator turning a new house into a smart home, ADT's apartment renter with her dog and Nixplay's mom with 80,000 photos all feel like real life rather than an ad, which is what a product for the home needs.

Video or static for smart home ads?

Video wins when the product has to be shown working (a robot vacuum, a window camera, shades opening at sunrise). Static works for a strong offer or proof point — Philips Hue's free bulbs, Dreame's record discount, SimpliSafe's award streak.

Where do these ads come from?

Meta's public Ad Library — the same tool anyone can use to search active Facebook and Instagram ads. Every ad here was running when we captured it, and each card links to that brand's live ads in the Ad Library so you can verify it yourself.

How do you pick which ads to include?

Brand-first, not keyword-first. Smart home keywords return a lot of installers, retailers and unrelated pages, so we search brands that make their own products, use Meta's impression-ranked sort, skip anything flagged as low-impression and keep one ad per brand.

How often is this page updated?

Monthly, with any ad that has stopped running replaced on the refresh.

Can I request my brand's ad be removed or credited differently?

Yes — contact us and we'll update or remove it. This page is an independent editorial showcase and isn't sponsored by or affiliated with any brand shown.
