Should You Hire a Shopify Expert?

Have you reached the point where you’re spending too much time on the logistics and intricacies of your Shopify store?

If you think your core business is suffering due to it – it might be time to hire a Shopify agency, or a Shopify expert.

But it’s not as simple as picking the first person who claims they can scale your store.

Real Shopify experts know the platform inside and out, from checkout optimizations to Shop Cash campaigns. In this guide, we’ll break down what makes a true expert, when to hire one, and how to spot the real deal from the pretenders.

What Is a Shopify Expert?

A Shopify Expert is a professional or agency with deep experience optimizing and scaling Shopify stores.

A real Shopify expert understands the platform inside and out—how to maximize conversions, improve store performance, and run highly targeted ad campaigns that drive revenue.

The problem? Many marketers claim to specialize in Shopify eCommerce. When in reality, they don’t.

So how to tell one is a real expert and not just “faking it?” One way is to look at their track record:

  • Have they worked with multiple Shopify stores?
  • Do they have case studies showing results such as better conversion rates at scalable ROI?
  • Do they have examples of ads and campaigns?

Another key factor is platform knowledge.

If you want to work with a Shopify expert, you’ll work with someone who doesn’t just run ads. They’d have to understand Shopify’s ecosystem top to bottom.

Apps, integrations, checkout optimizations, and platform analytics. Also, they’d need to understand Shopify-specific tools like Shopify Audiences, or platform-specific campaigns like Shop Cash campaigns.

There’s more that we will tackle later on in this article.

Shopify Experts usually understand the platform top-to-bottom and have long-term skin in the game. Our agency experts have been teaching Shopify eCommerce for year on certified Shopify events, such as this webinar:

When Should You Hire a Shopify Expert

Not every Shopify business needs an expert from day one.

But if you’re a brand owner, CMO, or agency managing Shopify stores, knowing when to bring in a specialist can be the difference between wasted ad spend and profitable scaling.

So when does it make sense to hire a Shopify expert? In a few cases.:

If your ads aren’t delivering the ROI you need, an expert can audit performance, optimize targeting, and ensure your budget drives revenue—not just traffic.

For CMOs and agencies, hiring an expert will take you less time troubleshooting underperforming campaigns and more time focusing on strategy.

Scaling is another key moment. If your store is growing and your team is stretched thin, outsourcing to an expert ensures your marketing and store performance remain optimized.

…While you focus on big-picture decisions.

For agencies, having a Shopify specialist on board means you can efficiently manage multiple brands without getting bogged down in platform complexities.

Technical roadblocks are also a sign. Struggling with integrations, tracking issues, or checkout optimizations?

A Shopify expert already knows the platform inside and out, solving problems quickly instead of wasting time figuring them out.

And if you’re launching a new brand or product, hiring an expert from the start ensures a conversion-driven foundation and avoids costly trial and error.

What are the Benefits of Hiring a Shopify Expert

Should you hire a Shopify expert? That’s up to you.

But we can tell you—based on our own experience with clients—what you can expect from hiring a Shopify expert that knows what to do.

What to Look For In a Shopify Expert

Not everyone is a Shopify expert, so choose the right one.

How do you separate the real ones from those looking to sell their services? Here’s what you should look out for.

Proven Track Record with Shopify Stores

First thing first—experience.

A Shopify expert will have experience working with multiple Shopify stores across different industries.

They should be able to provide case studies or portfolio examples that showcase their ability to:

  • Improve conversion rates
  • Scale ad campaigns profitably
  • Optimize store performance

Look for hard numbers and real results, such as revenue growth percentages, return on ad spend (ROAS) improvements, or successful Shopify store launches.

You’d want to look for a list of past and present clients, such as this one:

Deep Knowledge of the Shopify Ecosystem

Shopify is more than just a platform for your store. It’s an entire ecosystem with apps, integrations, and analytics.

A real expert understands Shopify’s native features and how to maximize them, can recommend and guide you through key Shopify apps—and understands platform-specific options like Shop Cash campaigns.

If an expert only focuses on ad buying but lacks knowledge of the platform itself, they may not be the right fit.

Strong Analytical Skills

If you want to succeed on Shopify, you can’t just go on about running ads blindly. It doesn’t work.

You’ll have to analyze data so you can make data-driven decisions.

A Shopify expert should understand the following:

  • Shopify Analytics and Reports
  • Google Analytics and UTM tracking
  • Facebook Pixel setup and server-side tracking
  • Consistent A/B testing to optimize and refine performance

Tip: Ask your potential Shopify expert how they measure success and optimize campaigns based on performance data. If they go around the above points, that’s a red flag.

BOX: We held many live tutorials on tracking implementation and analytics that you can check on our YouTube. If you feel like you’re too early for a Shopify expert, you might turn to DIY.

Experience with Scaling Stores

If your goal is to scale, your Shopify expert should have experience handling growth.

They should understand how to increase average order value (AOV) and customer lifetime value (LTV), understand how to decrease returns, and can also handle paid ad scaling tactics across Facebook, Google, TikTok, and email.

If they’ve only worked with small stores but lack experience scaling brands to six or seven figures, they might not be a good fit.

Look for proof of scaling. Are there past customers who are happy with the expert’s work? If they say an expert “helped them grow their business,” it’s usually a good sign.

Like this, for example:

Clear Communication & Transparency

Communication is half of the entire experience with a Shopify expert.

If they can explain strategies in a way that makes sense, instead of just using “big” words that you don’t understand, you’re onto something good.

Also, make sure they set clear expectations on deliverables and timelines. Vague timing or deliverables can frustrate you and make the entire experience negative.

That’s why regular updates and reports should allow you to track the progress of your joint efforts without feeling like you’re in the dark.

So ask potential experts how they communicate progress and whether they provide performance reports.

Technical Problem-Solving Ability

Shopify experts should be able to solve technical challenges quickly—from checkout optimziations, app integrations, to other, more difficult issues.

For example, if you’re dealing with tracking issues, slow site speed, or broken integrations, an expert should know how to diagnose and fix them efficiently.

A Shopify expert might also have a direct line to platform representatives, allowing you to solve any complex issues quickly.

You wouldn’t believe how often Meta locks accounts for now reason, preventing you to promote your Shopify store. In that case, communicating with a rep can do a world of good for you.

…and that’s just one example.

Reaching Out to the Experts

Hiring a Shopify expert can be a game-changer. But only if you choose the right one.

A true expert brings more than just ad skills; they understand the entire Shopify ecosystem, analyze data to drive growth, and solve technical challenges efficiently.

Before making a decision, look for proven results, platform expertise, and clear communication. The right expert will help you grow and scale sustainably.
