How to Opt Out of Shopify Agentic Storefronts (And Whether You Should)

💬 Heads up: If you run a Shopify store in the US, your products may already be discoverable, and sometimes purchasable, inside ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and Copilot. You didn't flip a switch.

Agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores. AI assistants can pull your products, prices, and images into their answers, and shoppers can sometimes buy without ever seeing your site.

For plenty of stores, that's free reach. For resellers with MAP pricing, wholesale-heavy shops, and brands with custom checkouts, it's a setting worth checking.

Here's how to opt out of Shopify agentic storefronts, hide individual products, and decide whether you actually should. Let's go.

What Shopify Agentic Storefronts Actually Turned On

Agentic storefronts let shoppers discover and buy your products in AI channels like ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta. Your products flow through Shopify Catalog, or, for Google, through your Google & YouTube channel and Merchant Center.

The default setting is called Allow Shopify to manage for me. It gives every available channel access to your products, turns on direct checkout where supported, and enrolls you in future AI channels automatically.

ChatGPT works differently from the rest. It's a discovery channel, and shoppers finish the purchase on your own store's checkout. You also keep the customer relationship, and orders show up in your admin with channel attribution.

How to Opt Out of Shopify Agentic Storefronts

"Opting out" isn't one button. You have four levers, from lightest to strictest.

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic.
  1. Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me. This unlocks per-channel settings and stops automatic enrollment in future channels.
  1. For each channel, choose whether to keep Catalog access, Direct checkout, or both.
LeverWhat it doesWhat it doesn't do
Direct checkout offShoppers are redirected to your online store to buyDoesn't hide your products
Catalog access offStops sharing product data through Shopify Catalog, which can take up to 7 daysDoesn't stop AI channels finding you by crawling
Hide individual productsRemoves chosen products from AI channelsAlso affects search visibility (see below)
Master toggle offGives you per-channel controlChanges nothing by itself

ChatGPT

There's no checkout setting because shoppers already buy on your checkout. You can still remove Catalog access for ChatGPT or Copilot.

Google AI Mode and Gemini

There's no Catalog toggle in the Agentic section, because discovery runs through your Google & YouTube channel. Changing that means changing your Google setup, which also powers your Shopping listings, so don't switch it off casually.

The Shop app

Your agentic preferences don't affect Shop. To remove a product from Shop, hide it.

How to Hide Specific Products From ChatGPT and Google AI Mode

To fully hide a product, set its status to Unlisted. Shopify also lists the seo.hidden metafield as an option. Unlisted also hides the product from sitemaps and search engines like Google, so use it on purpose.

Products worth hiding first:

  • Items with MAP or authorized-channel restrictions
  • Wholesale or B2B-only products
  • Discontinued or low-stock items
  • Products where a brand partner controls images or copy

If you hide B2B prices behind a login using third-party apps or theme edits, Shopify may not detect it, and those products could show up in AI channels. Use Shopify B2B, hide the products, or on Plus, run a separate expansion store.

💡 TIP: About a week after hiding products, search for them in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode to confirm they're gone.

Does Opting Out of AI Checkout Hurt Your Visibility in ChatGPT?

Separate checkout from discovery. If you turn off direct checkout, your products stay discoverable and shoppers get redirected to your store. That's the mildest move.

Turning off Catalog access is different. AI channels can still reach you through crawling and indexing, but that data may be less complete, accurate, or up to date. And if a product shows up in Google web search, Gemini can find it too.

Opting out doesn't make you invisible. It makes you less in control of how you appear.

💡 From our perspective: Turning off direct checkout is a low-risk call if you rely on checkout customizations. Turning off Catalog access is a bigger bet, because you're trusting crawlers to describe your products as well as your own structured data does. We haven't seen published data on how either choice affects ranking, so we'd treat both as tests, not conclusions.

Does Shopify's AI Channel Violate Your MAP Pricing or Reseller Agreement?

Shopify's documentation can't answer that. Your agreements can.

What the setup changes is where your product data, including price, appears: third-party AI surfaces you didn't publish to yourself. You're still the one who owns the customer relationship, but your brand partners may care where their products are listed and at what price.

Check your agreements for:

  • Limits on where you can list or advertise their products
  • Whether MAP covers advertised prices on AI assistants and similar surfaces
  • Authorized-channel or exclusivity clauses
  • Rules on images, copy, or brand usage

Not sure? Hide those products first, ask your partner in writing, then add them back. This isn't legal advice, so if it's a real contract question, run it past your lawyer.

Should You Opt Out? A Quick Decision Guide

You rely on custom checkout featuresTurn off direct checkout on affected channels, keep Catalog access on
You resell brands with MAP or channel rulesHide restricted products now, confirm with partners, then decide
You mix wholesale and DTCVerify B2B products aren't showing; use B2B catalogs or hide them
You want zero AI exposureTurn off everything you can, but know that products findable on Google can still be referenced
