Are ChatGPT Ads Profitable?

Let's answer right off the bat. It depends on your margin.

ChatGPT ads can produce real, profitable returns. There's public data showing it. But the channel also has structural quirks that make "profitable" a different question than it is on Google or Meta.

If you're only looking at click-through rate, you'll conclude the channel is broken. If you look at what those clicks actually convert to, the picture changes completely.

Let's walk through the actual numbers, where they come from, and how to tell if your store fits the profile of a brand that makes money here.

The Real Case Study, With Real Numbers

Most "ChatGPT ads results" content online is either OpenAI's own promotional framing or an agency's unverified claim.

One of the few rigorously documented public cases comes from Opascope, which published a 15-day account report: roughly $60,000 in spend against $89,000 in revenue, a 1.49x blended ROAS. That's a real account, real dollars, and a real (if short) time window. Profitable, but not the kind of eye-popping number some platform hype suggests.

That single case matters less as a benchmark and more as a proof point: the channel can run profitably, in the real world, this year — not just in theory.

For broader context, Sensor Tower has tracked category-level impression volume rising roughly 600% between early and mid-March 2026 as more advertisers entered the auction.

That's a sign the channel is moving past its earliest, least-competitive phase, which affects how much longer the current pricing window stays this favorable. If you haven't looked at current CPMs and CPCs, we track those in detail here.

Why Click-Through Rate Is the Wrong Number to Judge ChatGPT Ads On

If you compare ChatGPT ads to Google Search on CTR alone, ChatGPT loses badly and that comparison is misleading.

Similarweb's May 2026 analysis puts overall ChatGPT ads CTR around 0.68%, with top-quartile advertisers reaching 1% and the best performers hitting up to 5.4%. Compare that to Google and Microsoft's roughly 6.6% average CTR, and ChatGPT looks like it's underperforming by seven to ten times.

But that comparison ignores where the ad sits. A ChatGPT ad appears after the model has already answered the user's question — the user already got what they came for. The ad is a suggestion, not a gateway they have to click through to get information. Lower CTR is the structurally expected outcome of that placement, not a sign the channel is failing.

The number that actually matters is what happens after the click. And that's where ChatGPT ads look meaningfully different.

ChatGPT Ads Conversion Rate: The Real Story

Here's the number that should change how you think about this channel: ChatGPT ad conversion rates run roughly 2 to 3x higher than equivalent Google Shopping conversion rates in the same categories. A real, consistent lift observed across the ChatGPT Ads beta cohort.

Separately, Criteo's research across 500 US retailers found users referred from ChatGPT and similar AI platforms convert at approximately 1.5 times the rate of other referral channels.

Why? Users clicking a ChatGPT ad have already self-qualified through an entire conversation before they ever see your ad. Someone who typed three back-and-forth messages describing exactly what they need is a fundamentally different visitor than someone who typed a two-word Google query. Fewer people click — but the ones who do are further along in the decision than almost any other channel delivers.

That trade-off — fewer, pricier, better-qualified clicks — is the entire profitability story in one sentence.

The Math That Determines ChatGPT Profitability

Whether ChatGPT ads are profitable for your store comes down to three numbers you already know:

Your average order value. The direct-response math tends to work when your AOV exceeds roughly $300, because that margin can absorb a $25–$60 CPM without the unit economics breaking. Lower-AOV categories need to lean harder on the conversion-rate advantage to compensate.

Your conversion rate on intent-matched landing pages. If you can clear roughly 2% or better, the math holds even without a high AOV. This is achievable — commercial verticals in the ChatGPT Ads beta cohort have shown conversion rates in the 4–7% range, well above the 1.5–3.5% typical of Google Shopping in the same categories.

Whether you can measure past last-click. If a channel's real value shows up in branded search lift, direct traffic increases, or post-purchase survey mentions rather than clean last-click ROAS, you need the infrastructure to see that — otherwise a profitable channel can look unprofitable simply because you're not capturing the full picture.

Our ChatGPT ads measurement guide breaks down exactly what OpenAI's pixel and Conversions API can and can't show you.

💡 TIP: If none of your products clear roughly $300 AOV or 2% landing page conversion, that doesn't mean skip the channel entirely — it means you need the brand-lift case to justify spend, and that requires deliberately tracking branded search and direct traffic before and during your test, not just hoping the numbers show up.

What "Good" ChatGPT Ads Look Like By Category

Conversion benchmarks vary meaningfully by vertical. Research compiled across 19 industries found ChatGPT ad conversion rates ranging from 0.2% up to 5.8%, driven mostly by purchase complexity and where the shopper sits in their decision journey when they hit your ad.

High-consideration, high-intent categories cluster toward the top of that range; low-consideration, impulse categories sit lower.

The gap between an average account and a top-quartile account in the same category is often 2x in revenue-per-dollar-spent — and that gap isn't random. The accounts pulling ahead are consistently doing three things: writing genuinely conversational (not keyword-stuffed) product descriptions, keeping their merchant feed clean and current, and building the review and citation signals that get them recommended in the first place.

That's largely the same feed-quality work that determines whether you show up in organic ChatGPT Shopping results, which we cover in depth here.

The Honest Caveats

OpenAI hasn't published official cross-advertiser benchmarks. Every CTR, CVR, or ROAS figure circulating right now — including the ones in this article — comes from individual agencies, analytics platforms, or isolated account reports, not from OpenAI itself. Treat every number here as a planning input to model against your own account data, not a guarantee.

Attribution is still catching up to the channel's actual behavior. ChatGPT conversations often span multiple sessions before a purchase happens — someone researches on ChatGPT, closes the tab, and buys directly a week later. Last-click attribution systematically undervalues that pattern. If your finance team requires proof of ROAS within 30 days on a brand-new channel, ChatGPT ads will likely fail that test — not because the channel doesn't work, but because the measurement infrastructure to prove it fast enough doesn't fully exist yet.

You need basic CRM or analytics infrastructure to see the real picture. Without a way to connect a ChatGPT touchpoint to a purchase that happens days or weeks later through a different channel, you're only seeing a fraction of the value the channel is actually generating.

So... Are ChatGPT Profitable?

For the right store, yes. And there's a real, published account showing exactly that.

But "the right store" has a specific profile: healthy AOV or strong landing-page conversion, a product that genuinely benefits from conversational discovery, and the measurement patience to run a 60–90 day test rather than judging week one against a target ROAS.

Brands checking most of those boxes are seeing conversion rates meaningfully above their Google Shopping benchmarks in the same categories — that's not marketing spin, it's the pattern showing up consistently across early advertiser data.

Brands without that profile — thin margins, low AOV, no tolerance for a learning phase — are the ones most likely to conclude the channel "doesn't work," when what actually happened is the unit economics were never going to clear regardless of platform.
