Do you know exactly what your ChatGPT ad said yesterday?
If you're running self-serve ChatGPT ads and didn't touch your settings last month, the answer is probably no.
💬 On October 30, 2026, OpenAI switched on ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements by default for new and existing campaigns. That means OpenAI can now rewrite your headline, translate your copy, resize your image and send the click to a different page on your site, without you approving each version.
This isn't a small UI tweak. It changes what a ChatGPT ad is. Until now, you knew the exact words a user saw. Now the conversation can shape the ad, too.
Here's what creative enhancements are, what they can change, how they affect your results and tracking, and how we'd handle the setting for an eCommerce brand.
What Are ChatGPT Ads Creative Enhancements?
ChatGPT Ads creative enhancements are an OpenAI Ads Manager setting that lets OpenAI automatically adapt your existing ads to the conversation and user interests. OpenAI's stated goal: more relevant ads, better performance, and less work building multiple versions.
The system works from three inputs:
- The conversation context or the user's interests. What the person is asking ChatGPT about right now.
- Your existing ad. Headline, description, image and URL you already built.
- Your landing page content. OpenAI reads the page to find angles and details for the rewrite.
Variations can be prepared in advance or generated in real time based on the conversation. And while the setting is on, they run without you reviewing or approving each version. OpenAI's own help page says there's no preview of every variation.
The timeline moved fast:
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| Oct 30, 2026 | Creative enhancements switched on by default for campaigns that hadn't opted out |
| Oct 26, 2026 | Multi-image ads (4–6 square images) opened as a beta in Ads Manager |
| Oct 20, 2026 | OpenAI emailed advertisers announcing the default switch-on. |
| Sep 16, 2026 | OpenAI added an optional AI text customization step during ad setup. |
| Jul 2026 | Ads Manager started suggesting ad drafts from your website, which you reviewed before they ran |
Who it applies to: OpenAI's help page says the default covers new and existing self-serve and BPO campaigns. Sales-managed accounts aren't affected.
💡 TIP: Don't confuse creative enhancements with the "Add new ad" suggested drafts. Suggested drafts prefill an ad from your site's metadata, and you edit and approve them before launch. Creative enhancements change ads after launch, live, without your sign-off.
What ChatGPT Ads Creative Enhancements Can Change
OpenAI lists four kinds of changes. Two are cosmetic. Two change what your customer reads and where they land.
| What changes | What OpenAI can do | Risk level for DTC brands |
|---|---|---|
| Headlines and descriptions | Write new or updated copy that ties your offer to the conversation or user interests | Medium: tone, claims and promo wording can drift from what you approved |
| Language | Translate your ad text into another language | Medium to high: you may not read the version that runs |
| Images | Resize images to fit the ad format | Low: but check logos and text near the edges, since OpenAI hasn't said whether resizing crops |
| Destination URL | Send the click to a different, "relevant" page on your website | High: affects landing page match, conversion rate and tracking |
Here's what that looks like in practice. Say you sell trail running shoes and your ad reads "Lightweight Trail Shoes — Free Returns." A user asks ChatGPT which shoes handle muddy terrain. With enhancements on, OpenAI could rewrite your headline around grip and mud, and point the click at your waterproof collection instead of your homepage.
That might be exactly right. It might also land a shopper on a page with a sold-out hero product.
One switch controls all four. The setting is a single toggle. There's no option to allow text rewrites but block URL changes, at least as of November 8, 2026.
How Creative Enhancements Impact Your ChatGPT Ads
The pitch is relevance. The cost is control and clean data. Here's how it plays out across the three things that matter to an eCommerce brand.
1. Performance: more relevant, but harder to prove
ChatGPT's auction already rewards relevance. As we covered in our ChatGPT ads cost breakdown, a tighter, more contextual ad can win placements at a lower bid than a generic one. Ad copy that adapts to the exact question should lift CTR and lower effective CPC.
The catch: you can't see which version won. Ads Manager reports impressions, clicks, spend, CTR, CPC, CPM and attributed conversions at the campaign, ad group and ad level. Neither OpenAI's measurement page nor its creative enhancements page describes a report that breaks out each enhanced variation.
OpenAI says it plainly on its own help page:
"Changes over time do not, on their own, establish the effect of creative enhancements." — OpenAI Help Center
Translation: a CTR jump in November could come from enhancements, seasonality, Black Friday competition or the platform's growth. A before-and-after chart won't tell you which.
2. Tracking: the destination URL problem
This is the one we'd lose sleep over.
If OpenAI swaps your product page for a category page, OpenAI's help pages don't say whether the UTM tags you typed into the original URL travel with the click. Campaign-level query parameters and macros like {campaign_id} and {ad_id} are applied at delivery, but how they interact with an enhanced destination isn't documented yet.
If UTMs break, your ChatGPT ads measurement breaks with them. GA4, Triple Whale or Northbeam may start crediting sales to direct or organic, and the channel looks worse than it is.
3. Brand and compliance: words you never wrote
A rewritten headline carries your brand name. If it overstates a benefit, mentions an expired promo, or translates a claim badly, that's still your ad.
This matters most for:
- Supplements, skincare and wellness, where claim wording is regulated
- Brands running time-bound promos, since OpenAI pulls from landing page content
- Brands with a strict voice, where an off-tone headline costs more than a few clicks
Your landing page is now ad copy
This is the biggest mindset shift. Creative enhancements read your landing page to write the ad. Outdated prices, old promo banners, vague product copy or stock issues on that page can show up in the ad itself.
Treat every page a ChatGPT ad can reach like ad creative. Because now it is.

How to Turn Off (or Control) ChatGPT Ads Creative Enhancements
You can change the setting any time, at two levels:
- Account level: sets the default for every campaign.
- Campaign level: overrides the account default for that campaign.
So you can switch it off account-wide and turn it back on for one test campaign. Or leave it on and exclude your most sensitive campaigns.
To change it:
- Sign in to Ads Manager at ads.openai.com.
- Go to Settings (or Manage settings).
- Find the Creative enhancement card.
- Toggle it off to set your account default.
- Open each live campaign and confirm its own setting, since campaign settings beat the account default.
A few things to know:
- Turning it off stops future enhancements only. Versions that already ran since October 30 can't be recalled.
- The Advertiser API can't change it. If you manage several accounts through a tool, it's still a manual click per account.
- Opt-outs you set before October 30 were kept. If you opted out early, you're fine, but double-check new campaigns.
Should You Keep Creative Enhancements On? Our Take
From where we sit: don't leave it on by accident, and don't switch it off forever. Test it.
We've watched this pattern play out on every major platform. Meta's Advantage+ creative enhancements are on by default. Google pushed text customization through AI Max. Automation that's "on unless you opt out" sometimes wins and sometimes quietly spends on the wrong things. The only way to know which is a controlled test.
Here's how we'd set it up for an eCommerce brand:
| Option | When it fits | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Off by default, test in one campaign (recommended) | Most DTC brands spending on ChatGPT ads today | Clean read on impact, protects your best campaigns and your tracking | Slower to capture any upside |
| 2. Leave it on everywhere | Broad catalogs, simple claims, solid tracking already verified | Least work, most variation volume | No way to isolate its effect, brand and URL risk across all spend |
| 3. Off everywhere | Regulated claims, strict brand voice, multi-language markets you can't QA | Full control over every word | You give up any relevance lift while competitors test |
The test we'd run
- Switch enhancements off at the account level.
- Duplicate one proven campaign. Same context hints, bids, budget and landing pages. Turn enhancements on for the copy only.
- Run both over the same dates for 3–4 weeks. Same dates matters more than anything. It cancels out seasonality and auction swings.
- Wait 48 hours before reading conversions. Attributed conversions can take 24–48 hours to appear in Ads Manager.
- Judge on cost per purchase and ROAS in your own analytics, not CTR alone. A more clickable ad that lands on the wrong page is a worse ad.
If the enhanced campaign wins on CPA with clean attribution, expand it campaign by campaign. If it doesn't, you've lost nothing but a few weeks.

Creative Enhancements Checklist: What to Do This Week
Whatever you decide, run through this list:
- Check the account default and every live campaign's creative enhancement setting
- Click a live ad on iOS, use Share to copy the full link, and confirm your UTMs arrive (the in-app browser only shows the hostname)
- Make sure robots.txt, your CDN and firewall don't block OAI-AdsBot or OAI-SearchBot
- Update prices, promos and stock on every page a ChatGPT ad could reach
- Remove expired promo banners and claims you wouldn't want in an ad headline
- If you run multi-image ads, assume enhancements may apply. OpenAI hasn't said either way
- Note the date you changed settings, so future reporting has a clean before/after marker
